Mozambique is characterised by a broad coastal plain and plateaux and highlands in the
interior. The coastline is more than 2,500 km long and nine river systems mainly rise in
neighbouring countries and flow from west to east, emptying into the Indian Ocean. There
is an October to March rainy season, and cyclones and floods are normal annual occurrences.
Drought is also common, and Mozambique is sufficiently large that in some years drought and
flood may occur simultaneously in different parts of the country.
