Invitation

On behalf of the Centre for Conflict Resolution (CCR), Cape Town, the Centre for Policy Studies (CPS), Johannesburg, and the Southern African Poverty Network (SARPN), Tshwane, it is our pleasure to invite you to a policy meeting on “HIV/AIDS and Human Security: An Agenda for Southern Africa”. This meeting will be held at the Burgers Park Hotel, Pretoria, on Thursday 1 December 2005, from 13h00 – 16h30.

The objective of this meeting is to commemorate World AIDS Day and its call to “keep the promise”: to support efforts for the fulfillment of the commitments made by world leaders in the 2001 Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS. CCR, CPS, and SARPN have been working closely to enhance Southern Africa’s peace and security mechanisms, such as the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Following a successful meeting organised by SARPN on Human Security, Poverty and Conflict in SADC in Mauritius in August 2005, the three organisations are seeking, in collaboration with policymakers, scholars, civil society and members of the general public, to assess the threat of HIV/AIDS while simultaneously examining and strengthening human security approaches for building peace in Southern Africa and beyond.

In that respect, two new CCR reports will also be launched, and disseminated on 1 December 2005:

  • HIV/AIDS and Human Security: An Agenda for Africa, a policy report based on a policy advisory group seminar in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the participation of the African Union (AU), on 9 and 10 September 2005; and

  • Whither SADC? Southern Africa’s Post-Apartheid Security Agenda, a report based on a policy advisory group meeting in Cape Town on 18 and 19 June 2005.
Please send your RSVP to Ms Dawn Alley at CCR at the following email address: and Ms Elizabeth Myburgh at: as soon as possible to confirm your attendance.
