Managing Water Disasters and Minimizing the Vulnerability of Mozambique to Floods - Minister Roberto White

3.4 FLOOD WARNING SYSTEMS

A flood warning system must be studied and established for each of the most flood prone basins in Mozambique – particularly for the Maputo, Umbeluzi, Incomati, Limpopo, Save, Buzi, Pungoй, Zambezi and Licungo rivers. It is now clear that what exists is inadequate and insufficient for the intended purposes.

A flood warning system includes a series of components, namely the collection and analysis of hydrometeorological data; the derivation, by input to a mathematical model of the rainfall and hydrometric data, of flood hydrographs and flood wave propagation, giving indications of water levels and lead times along the river; the issuing of flood warnings; and the liaison with other agencies.
