Economic Report for period July to December 2001 - Minister Simba Makoni

1. Introduction

The performance of the economy continued to deteriorate in 2001 and is estimated to have declined by 7.3% compared to 4.2% in 2000. This was mainly due to high inflation and acute foreign currency shortages which resulted in increased costs of production and supply bottlenecks, respectively. These problems and the impact of the AIDS pandemic worsened the economic and social well-being of the nation.
