PRESENTATION: The Sustainability of Energy Provision and Poverty Alleviation Measures and Business Development in Rural Communities

The paper discusses the application of the Methodology for Participation Approach, a methodology developed for the water sector under the World Bank Programme and now being adopted for use in the Biomass Energy Sector. A case study was recently completed on gender integration in Biomass Energy by the presenter, Elizabeth Cecelski and two Namibian counterparts. This presentation will focus on the issues of sustainability of energy provision and poverty alleviated measures encountered during the case study, other projects done during the coordination of the Southern African Gender and Energy Network and international negotiations towards the WSSD. The paper would assess strategies employed in various countries and programme, aimed at enhancing the quality of life of rural people through provision of energy services and income generating activity. Players and initiatives in the field will be highlighted in the area, leading to the run-up towards the WSSD.
