Seminar speaker: Mr Musooka Kiwanuka Achilles



Mr Musooka Kiwanuka Achilles has a Postgraduate Diploma in Renewable Energy Management and Installation and a Bachelor of Science with Education (B.Sc.Educ.Hon), specialising in Physics. Mr Achilles has experience in the installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance of renewable energy systems, rural energy project planning, design, development and implementation, project appraisals and monitoring (technical, economic and financial), market research, training and various energy studies.

He has designed systems in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania and has attended several specialized PV and energy related training courses in Europe, India and the USA. Mr Achilles is the General Manager Solar Energy For Africa Ltd and an Executive Member of the Uganda Renewable Energy Association.

PRESENTATION: Appropriate Energy Technology, Efficiency For Rural Development.

The presentation spells out forms of energies (wind, solar and water) and their comparisons for the most effective and appropriate energy variable for rural electrification in rural communities of Africa. The focus in the Paper is completely based on an integrated, portable, user-friendly and basic energy system for rural households. Based on my company’s experience of 13yrs, there has been a continuous increase of renewable energy technologies, especially in the field of solar energy. The presentation explains how solar energy systems based on the stand alone, or hybrid power generation systems can offer practical solution to provide the energy needed for rural communities, poverty alleviation, community health, education and in many other fields.

It further explains the differences between offering an alternative energy technology and choosing energy efficiency for rural development, which requires reliability and cheap accessibility. It also advocates for methods to be implemented in order to achieve greater use of appropriate and efficient energy technology. In conclusion the paper states that if all issues raised are implemented this will stimulate general socio-economic developments in rural communities through the availability of appropriate energy technologies.
