  • Rural Population – 62% (1.2 million)
  • Unelectrified rural localities - 2,486 (of 2,855)
  • Number of Rural Households 260 000
  • Population growth - 3.15% per annum
  • Urbanisation - 5% pa
  • Unemployment – 30%-40%
  • Unelectrified health facilities – 50% (of 603)
  • Unelectrified Schools – 58% (of 1 470)
  • Adult Literacy – 76%
  • Household Size – 5.2
3. THE ENERGY SECTOR I

  • Energy Resources
    Biomass and Biogas (230 million tonnes biomass)
    • Electricity: 400MW + 650MW imported + 1200MW potential
    • Solar: 2,200 kWh/mІ pa
    • Wind: min. 3, max. 14 m/sec (coast)
    • Gas: 2.5TCF proven, 20 TCF potential Kudu (50,000 million mі)
    • Oil: prospects off Namibia’s north coast
    • Coal: Aranos Basin (350 million tonnes at a depth of about 200 – 300 meters ( not developed)
4. THE ENERGY SECTOR II

  • Energy consumption per annum
    • Biomass: 230 million tonnes
    • Electricity: 330 MW, 2,000 GWh
    • Solar: 3.74MWp installed (SWH, PVP, SHS and Solar Cookers)
    • Petroleum products:
      - Consumption: 800 000 tones/year (800 million litres),
    • Wind: 30,000wind pumps, 120 kWp turbines (that translates into 25000 bbl/d), chief products is diesel and petrol)

  • Electricity
    • Ruacana hydro-electric plant (240MW)
    • Van Eck coal-fired power station (120MW)
    • Paratus HFO power station (24MW)
    Import
    • Import from ESKOM: 500 MW via 400 kv inter-con
    • Import from Zambia: Eastern Caprivi (3.5MW)
    New projects (planned)

    • In planning stage: Popa Falls hydro (50MW)
    • Planned: Kudu CCGT (800MW)
    • Planned: Lower Kunene hydro (450MW)
