The Food Security Programme and the Discipline of Agricultural Economics of the University of KwaZulu-Natal call for submissions of interactive case studies from food security-related disciplines and transdisciplinary food security enthusiasts for an all-day workshop prior to the Agricultural Economics Association of South Africa Conference. The aim of the workshop is to share successful African experiences in three distinct areas: food policy; interventions to promote household food security; and methods used to monitor food security.

A call is hereby made for submission of interactive Power Point case studies of 20 minutes each. The case studies should focus on one of the following elements: food security policy, interventions or monitoring systems either in a single African country or regional comparisons between African countries. Each case study should be accompanied by an abstract of no more than 500 words.

The workshop facilitators will preview and review the case studies and the best 7 studies will be selected for presentation at the workshop. The workshop facilitators will cover the return flight of one presenter per paper from an African airport to the conference, accommodation and meals for the 20 September and the workshop fee.

Agreement to present the selected case studies will include permission by the authors for the case studies to be included in a CD of the workshop proceedings to be sent to workshop participants and permission for the case study to be posted onto the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Food Security Programme web site (http://www.ukzn.ac.za/foodsecurity/) as part of the workshop proceedings. In return, authors of the selected case studies will be awarded honoraria of R1000 per selected case study.

Submissions of case studies and abstracts should be submitted by e-mail to Dr S Hendriks at hendriks@ukzn.ac.za by no later than the 30 July 2005. Submissions should be accompanied by the CVs of the author's, full contact details, a declaration that the presentation in no way infringes copyright regulations, and permission to include the case study on the above-mentioned CD and web site (should the case study be selected for presentation). The facilitators' decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
